3M™ Centre Pin Back-Up Pad
3M Centre-pin back up pads are used with Scotch-Brite surface conditioning discs. Used to prepare and/or finish metal surfaces in fewer steps and in less time than conventional abrasives, such as grinding discs and wire wheels. The centre-pin attachment system contributes to a reduction in tool vibration by centring, securing and maintaining the disc in the correct position on the back-up pad.
Features and Benefits
• Quick and easy placement and centering of discs
• Does not interfere with work surface
• Allows disc to be used at usual angle
What safety requirements should I observe?
When grinding metal or sanding, appropriate personal protection equipment should be worn. Gloves, eye protection and even respiratory protection are essential PPE for general purpose grinding and polishing applications.
For safe operation of an angle grinder, be sure you have participated in appropriate training and are aware of all safety advice relevant to the material you are working on.

3M Backing Pad, 115mm Diameter - Scotch-Brite Series - 61680
Attach this 3M backing pad to surface conditioning discs to deliver a smooth cutting action. It holds the sanding disc in the correct position during the preparation and finishing of metal surfaces. The pad uses a centre-pin attachment system to reduce disc vibration. Combining it with surface sanding discs improves airflow and removal of debris, so you can rely on it for consistent cutting. This is a versatile choice that's suited to finishing and sanding applications including polishing granite or marble.
• Centre-pin attachment system extends disc lifespan by ensuring an even wear
• Capable of reaching a maximum safe speed of 12,000 rpm (rotations per minute) for efficiency
• Designed for quick and easy centring and placement of discs
Applications
• Dual-action sanding
• Vacuum-assist sanding
• Random orbital sanding
• Soft polishing
Do I always need a backing pad when I use abrasive discs?
Using a backing pad is a simple way to improve the performance and extend the lifespan of abrasive discs in sanding jobs. If your pad is worn, it can damage the disc by wearing out the edges while leaving the middle relatively unused. Soft backing pads are suitable for fine surfaces where avoiding edge gouging is critical. Firm backing pads are ideal for coarse surfaces that need more pressure.
