How does the spring force work in this compact pneumatic cylinder?

The spring force causes the piston to retract once the compressed air supply has shut off. It's conveniently located in between the piston and the cylinder. The maximum return force of 10.6N (newtons) ensures there's enough pressure for a smooth return.
